Persuasive Writing

In class, I ahev been learning new things like emotive language and sentence types. These topics help me make my writing sound more efficient or interesting.

Hi Mum,

As you already know that I have survival night on Thursday 1st December 2022, which would be held in Waima forest and I would just want to notify you that I really want to go, but first listen to what I have to say.

The first reason I think I should be able to go is I will have a superb experience. I’ll also have a magical time going swimming, bombing, roasting marshmallows, and star gazing. I will be connecting with the people around me and it would be great to help me develop my collaboration with others and not just the people I know. This will also be an outdoor experience, so this could give me a chance to try something in the wild because I’m usually not outdoors. Some challenges have been arranged, that class can engage in or at least try, this could be the time when I participate in something different.

A second reason that I should go to Survivor is I will be learning remarkable skills. The skills I’ll be learning are building a shelter, bush safety, bird monitoring, and making a fire. I’ll also be hiking up a 2-hour mountain, which will help with my health and fitness. Don’t worry you're probably thinking that it is too dangerous, but there are trustworthy adults, that will make sure we are all safe, I will work smarter not harder plus you won’t have me around the house and I have to cook my own food, also I don’t want to be missing out on an event like this.

That is why you should let me go to Survivor 2022 it would be a real advantage for me, so please let me go on this adventurous trip! This will help me physically and mentally I could also hang out with my dearest friends. It would be a pleasure if you said yes. Please, mum! Let me go!

Yours sincerely,

Your daughter.

Bike Day

In class, we had to work on an information report about a bike-ready program, everyone was able to make a dissicion whether they would want to work independently or with a partner. I had a partner: Kobe
On a fine balmy day at Kaikohe Christian School, Years 5-8 students had a bike day program. This was an outside venue where everyone gathered to learn about the importance of being safe on a bike. Years 7-8 were the first on Tuesday 18th of October, and years 5-6 went two days later on Thursday 20th. There were three instructors: Gwen, Sam, and Shay.

What was the purpose of the day?

This was an opportunity for young, intelligent students to build their confidence in riding a bike, and enjoy engaging with each other.

How the day ‘played out
The day was planned out well, and it was prosperous. Sam called out the student's name and Shay sorted everyone from tallest to shortest, talking about how to put on a helmet properly, and also how to have a dependable balance and ride slowly. Then Sam taught everyone A B C D E Q and she did an example of what it meant showing the years 7-8 what to do. “All right everyone line up!” Shane called out. Everyone raced to their spots and started with a lap around the field and playground. One by one they single-filed following each other at a slow and steady pace. After, there was a challenging game to test people’s unique slow-riding skills, when they were told that they were playing floor is lava, but on bikes, everyone shouted with excitement. “The last man standing wins!” Sam shouted. The years 7-8 were having a blast and were all enjoying themselves.

Conclusion

The day concluded with riding freely over ramps and giving the constructors a high five for all the good listening and good work that the year 5-8 had done.

Going back further, I am also part of the Chordata phylum my wing spand is 2.9 - 3.3 meters, my beak is a yellowish-pink colour and I am the largest sea bird. I am also related to all the animals that ramble on the Earth, but only very distantly. My full name is Diomedeidae. I am related to all the Aves in the world.

The Three Servant Parable

This week we read about the parable of the three servants and we had to summarize about the story.

This is about three servants earning money from their master, who left to travel to rely on his servants to use the talents they were given. The first servant had 5 talents, the second servant had two, and the third servant only had one. Each of them had to have the ability to use their money. Two of the servants doubled the amount they were given, but the third servant buried his earnings into the ground and gave it back. The master was incensed, so the servant was punished severely.

Something that taught me is that we all have different gifts or talents that we develop, or learn about. Some talents can be seen by what people do with their physical bodies while others are seen in ones thinking capacities. All talents were given to us by God, so we should not waste time or be lazy with our talents, but serve others and God. For example, Bodily-kinesthetic intelligence is my strongest talent.

Limerick

In class, we have been learning about limericks, different poems, and features. The class had to choose a person they know and write a poem about them.

In class, I learned about limerick poems. They are poems that rhyme and can have 5 lines, the first two sentences have to rhyme then you change the third and fourth sentences because they can't rhyme with the first and second sentences, then you finish the fifth sentence.

Kobe:

I once met a girl from Kaikohe

She always said kahore

And her name was Kobe

Who knew nobody

That is my friend I met from Kaikohe

Erosion and Meander Slides

In class we had to choose different topics that link to rivers. We had the choice of doing a puppet show, make slides, and say your topic out loud with cards. Me and Kobe chose to make slides about our topics, erosion and meanders. We did research on erosion and meanders, finding websites to help us learn and understand what erosion and meanders are. Each group would stand up and present their topics to the class.
Here is the work me and Kobe have done.

Create Task

In class, we have been learning about rivers and what it does. We had a choice of partnering up. I was with Kobe. We also had to make a create task where we choose some topics and research them and we both decided to choose erosion and meander

Here is the work that me and Kobe did together.

Ki-o-rahi Reflection

Yesterday our class went to a ki-o-rahi tournament in Tautoro to play against other schools. We played against intermediate and Tautoro school. There were two teams we had, team 1 `give it a go team´ and team 2 `in it to win it´ team. We also had to do a group reflection about it. After the tournament, we came 3rd and Tautoro school came 1st. It was fun to play as well and being outside the classroom.
Here is the work that me and Anahera have done. Also, there are photos down the bottom.

Water cycle

In class, we have been learining about the water cycle and its process

Here is what I have done

Thirst Hot Task

In class, we read Thirst, and our task was to make up our own ending to the story.

I think I have done the following well: Figurative language, show not tell

 Most exciting part

“Ryder!”, Dad yelled “You better get here right now!”. Ryder’s expression changed into a look of fear. “Oh no what should I do and where am I supposed to go?” Ryder said to himself. “I can't just stay here forever”. Ryder was hiding in a dead, dry tree where no one could find him because he knew what was coming for him. Tears threatened to burst from Ryder’s eyes. A shiver ran down his spine he knew he had to go soon. The more he hid, the more guilt flowed through him. Dad started to get worried because he thought that Ryder was long gone. Could he have been? The sun was setting, there was a pink and orange sky, but no sign of Ryder. Dad shouted once more. “Ryder please come back!” Dad cried out, “Just come home”. Ryder was like ice frozen in place; no matter what, he didn’t move. Suddenly… SNAP! A branch fell out of the tree. “No” Ryder whispered. Dad’s eyes quickly drew to the sound with his ears listening, his eyes looking and waiting for something to happen. But nothing. Not a sound.

Solution

It had been over an hour, Ryder’s legs were aching and he decided to go home. Maybe. His mind started to think of different things that could happen, he didn't want to imagine how that would go. A cold breeze curled around the trees giving Ryder goosebumps. Longing to go back home dad was searching and scanning the area. It was pitch black and dad wanted to look one more time for Ryder. “Ryder! Ryder! Come out please”, dad yelled. Ryder watched his dad as he was walking around with a torch while mum and Brooke joined to search as well. “Ryder where are you,” Brooke yelled. There was no answer. Ryder was tired he lied down on a thick branch and went to sleep with little things stabbing his back like a knife. The next day Ryder’s stomach was empty and it had been a cold. He gave up on hiding away from his family and he missed seeing them he also had been lonely for the last night, with the darkness strangling him.

Ending
Ryder climbed out of the tree and walked back home with scratches on him. When he got home his dad was on the couch frustrated he looked up to see a figure. It was Ryder. “Ryder!” dad cried. They both hugged with joy. Mum and Brooke woke up to see what the noise was. When they saw Ryder their eyes opened wide and they ran over to hug him. “Ryder!” Brooke said. “Ryder where were you? I thought that you were gone” mum sobbed. “I’m okay. I’m sorry for hiding from youse and stealing the water,” Ryder said “It's alright you didn’t mean to, but there will be a consequence for you” mum responded. Ryder understood what his mum was saying and they all had another warm embracing hug.

Narrative Plot Planner

In class, we have been reading a book called thirst. We also had to do a narrative plot planner

Here is what I have done

Have you ever wondered how scientists know if rivers are healthy?

In class, we have been learning about the water cycle and its functions. Here is a reading response I did during class this week

Narrative Writitng

I have been learning to use show not tell to make a narrative interesting. I have been learning how to use show not tell to make my narrative exciting. I have tried to have a character dialogue, and describe what characters think and feel. This is a story I changed.

                                                          The Rip
There were two brothers who were not at all alike;  they were different in every way. The younger brother stayed on the sand. Jack the older brother, was always in the water. Jack liked to swim with his bros, diving and tumbling, bombing and snorkeling, and surfing in the waves. During the day Jack wanted to go on lots of adventures but James the younger brother would stay safe on the sand. Sometimes Jack would creep up to James and drag him into the water. “Oh come on you little chicken, it’s only waves,” Jack said.

One morning their mother got angry with them, “like cats and mice! Out you go, both of you”, mum said angrily. “and just be nice and try to bond with each other for once”. “Why are you coming? ”Jack moaned. James sighed, “I didn’t even want to come in the first place. “You're such a baby! You're afraid of everything” Jack walked, leaving James behind. When the two brothers arrived at the beach Jack dived straight into the water but James stayed on the sand building a sandcastle. “Come on, get in!” Jack yelled. ‘‘Why would I go into the water when there are massive waves that can smash you like a hammer!”, James yelled back.

‘‘Hey James! Come here’’, Jack yelled. James refused and shook his head, but he was curious. James walked over to see why Jack wanted him. ‘‘What is it?’’, James questioned. ‘‘look do you see that over there?’’ Jack asked ‘‘There is a rip right there and I'm going to go in it’’. ‘‘NO! You can't it's too dangerous!’’ Jack ignored James as he dived straight into the dark, creepy rip. Jack got sucked out into the ocean waves like mountains crashed down on him.

James swam as fast as he could trying to reach his brother, but Jack kept on getting stuck under the waves. Fear gripped his heart. Tears threatened to burst from his eyes. What could he do? He had to go further deep into the ocean. The sea was cold, deep, and creepy. As it got deeper James found himself in a dark part of the ocean - there was no sign of his brother. Shivering, he saw the sea morph into a dark hole. Sharks, stingrays, jellyfish - what kind of creatures are lurking at him? His mind told him to turn back, but his heart wouldn’t let him. He could not leave - for what would become of his brother. “Jack! Where are you?” he yelled as he swam. The more he swam, the more he wanted to find his brother. In a nick of time, a surfer zoomed in on his board and snatched James out of the water. “Woah little dude what are you doing out here?” the surfer said. “My brother is in the rip” James cried, “Don’t worry kid ill get him”. The surfer pulled Jack onto his surfboard and took Jack and James onto the sand where they were safe. “Thank you for saving us,” Jack said, “No worries,” The surfer said, “and call me Kai. In Hawaiian culture, it means "sea."

The soft wind came through and brushed all the sand off their feet it was a nice soothing breeze and Jack and James were happy to see each other. They wrapped their arms around each other and decided to go home now after that long crazy day. They ran back through the sand together. when they had arrived home and their mother was doing the dishes. ‘‘Hello guys,’’ mother said, ‘‘you two seem oddly silent. ‘‘Is everything ok what happened?’’ James quietly giggled. Jack was trying to hold in his laugh. ‘‘Oh, nothing happened,’’ James smirked.
